As part of its work to implement the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and to develop a measure of school success—or “indicator”—around the fine arts, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is seeking feedback from the state’s education stakeholders. ISBE is developing a process that will create a vision for the purpose and intended outcomes of stakeholder engagement; identify stakeholders, engage them through intentional outreach, and organize their feedback; and create mechanisms for following up with stakeholders. Building on previous work on ESSA listening tours in Illinois, the Midwest Comprehensive Center is helping ISBE to design this process.

What Are We Doing?
  • Coordinating monthly meetings with ISBE staff to develop a stakeholder engagement protocol and a toolkit to support future engagement
  • Facilitating peer-to-peer collaborative sessions to support ISBE’s refinement of the Illinois Balanced Assessment Model rubric
  • Facilitating meetings of the Arts Indicator Workgroup, whose feedback informs the stakeholder engagement protocol
  • Supporting the Performance Evaluation Advisory Council by creating a system with ISBE to process and respond to stakeholder feedback
